Working in Richmond, a suburb of Australia’s second largest city, Melbourne, Leong spends most of his time meeting with clients and discussing the financial needs of their businesses, which span eight different industries: marine, power sports, recreational vehicles, agricultural, construction, lawn and garden, technology, and electronics and appliances.

Leong, who has a background in underwriting consumer loans, joined Wells Fargo in 2016 through Wells Fargo’s acquisition of GE Capital Finance’s business in Australia and New Zealand.

“At Wells Fargo, the level of opportunity is vastly different in comparison to my previous work. My role allows me to travel throughout the state of Victoria and to the island of Tasmania and have significant customer exposure.”

Wells Fargo has major presence in Melbourne and Sydney and smaller operations in Adelaide and Perth, as well as in New Zealand. About 130 team members provide financial services to business clients in both countries.

Doing the right thing for customers

The secret for his professional success at Wells Fargo Leong sees in being sincere in what he does and doing the right thing for the customer. “Having grown up in a family that owns a small business, I have come to value the importance of helping customers by being sincere and respectful.”

These two strengths of character have stood Leong in good stead. No wonder then that his customer-centeredness was recognized with the Global CDF Customer Experience Award in 2017 – the highest team member award in Wells Fargo Commercial Distribution Finance.

Leong also relishes the many opportunities to interact with different functions – Risk, Operations, Finance, and Marketing – and to meet with colleagues in offices across Australia. “I can thus learn more about what other teams are doing, better understand the organization and build long-term working relationships.”

Leong and his colleagues from the Melbourne office also make tangible contributions to the well-being of the local community. For example, they organize regular blood donation drives for the Australian Red Cross and volunteer at the local Sunshine North Primary School.
