Kevin-Ian Canono
Technical Writer
Manila, the Philippines
For Kevin-Ian the big professional breakthrough came about quite unexpectedly in the early autumn of 2018. Having completed his university studies five years before, he was still trying to find his dream job in his native Philippines. Although he had the diploma and education, the skills, passion for work, and some work experience, Kevin lacked the ability to turn all those qualities into words to impress during job interviews. He had a speech impediment, which has led to many rejections.
"I failed at a number of job interviews because many companies see first your weaknesses over your strengths,” says Kevin. “They do not give you the chance to prove your worth and show how you can contribute to the business, but instead consider you a liability from the time they see how you choke on your words during interviews. In previous jobs, colleagues and even managers criticized my condition."
No wonder then that he approached the job interviews at Wells Fargo with considerable trepidation. Will he be successful at last?
Welcome to Wells Fargo
In fact, the young Filipino need not have worried. What Kevin came to hear from the hiring manager at the end of the thorough interview process was music to his ears: “Wells Fargo promotes equality and welcomes everyone, including people with diverse abilities. As long as you can do your job, you are welcome here.” Kevin’s journey on the Wells Fargo stagecoach had started.
He joined the bank as a technical writer for Treasury Management (TM) Desktop Business Writing at Wells Fargo in Manila, Philippines.
"It has been so hard to find a company that promotes diversity like Wells Fargo does. From the start, I knew that I had finally found a “home” here,” says Kevin. “I really love writing and being a technical writer here in Wells Fargo is a dream come true. I feel valued and that I am growing professionally and personally."
What you are good at can take you far
As a technical writer, Kevin has a busy day that revolves around editing, updating, and publishing new procedures and content in the Treasury Management’s Knowledge Center. These include product information, system procedures, department directories, reference materials, and other resources for specific business groups at the company.
Kevin is successful at his job in no small part thanks to his talent and passion for writing. “My love for the written word has earned me a lot of writing awards and also helped me to build and secure a bright future for myself,” says the writer, who also manages a support group for people with speech impediments, and is also an active social media influencer.
The technical writer is now well integrated in his team. "With the support of our business unit and Wells Fargo India and Philippines as a whole, I and my fellow team members will continue to strive harder to provide all the necessary support information needed and to offer the best services to our customers around the globe. My goal is to go out there to serve people and make an impact with my writing and Wells Fargo opened that elusive opportunity at last."
For Kevin, Wells Fargo is a company that truly cherishes diversity and is a business where job candidates with diverse abilities no longer need approach job interviews with trepidation.
