My role

I help relationship managers underwrite real estate deals for all property types through modeling and spreading financial statements, writing parts of call memorandums, preparing market reports, completing financial reviews, coordinating with Real Estate Technical Services for third-party reports (including appraisals, environmental, and property conditions reports), participating in discussions with credit officers, and meeting clients at industry events.

What keeps me interested

I work on some of the largest real estate transactions in Dallas and across the country. Working on so many different types of deals makes the job exciting and new every day. No two deals are the same, so underwriting and structuring new opportunities present new challenges. The most interesting deal I am working on right now is a $100 million, 60% loan-to-cost nonrecourse loan to finance the acquisition of a huge office building. The building has been an iconic part of the Chicago skyline since 1930, so it has been a neat project to work on and an opportunity that does not come around every day.

Support for my career

When I began the Financial Analyst Program, I attended Credit Fundamentals training, which helped me understand Wells Fargo and why we do what we do. I enjoyed meeting colleagues in similar positions across the country and have maintained my network of contacts. This network is especially useful when I need perspective from other Commercial Real Estate offices or assistance working with different Wells Fargo groups. Credit Fundamentals helps you see what your future at Wells Fargo could be like and is a great way to begin your time in the program.

Wells Fargo culture

Overall, I would describe the culture at Wells Fargo as very team-oriented, and one that values hard work, communication, and integrity. We have helped Commercial Real Estate offices around the country with local site inspections and market tours. Offering our input and market research to these projects fosters a sense of national teamwork and cooperation, and underscores the importance of our team approach.

Words of advice

Be persistent and maintain your network. You never know where those connections will take you.

My role

I work with relationship managers to underwrite real estate loans in the Carolinas region. My responsibilities include underwriting commercial loans, maintaining client relationships, and supporting my relationship managers in offering a level of service beyond what any other lender can provide.

What keeps me interested?

Real estate is tangible, and all of my work and projects present opportunities to visit each property we add to our portfolio. I also enjoy learning about the role each property plays in our local community. I am working on a large, multifamily underwriting project. The due diligence and underwriting of a project this size, and the ability to walk outside and visualize what the result will be has been a rewarding and eye-opening experience.

Support for my career

The Credit Fundamentals class, which is the training all analysts take when they start the Financial Analyst Program, provided the essentials needed to become a successful analyst and allowed me to make connections across the country. I learned aspects of commercial lending that have helped me understand and communicate more effectively in my analyst role. This experience gave me the opportunity to work with others and prepare for challenges I know I will have throughout my professional career. In addition, my managers and colleagues continually go out of their way to share their experience and knowledge so that I am able to progress in my role. My manager is kind, supportive, and integral to my success in the Financial Analyst Program. Everyone in my office is extremely happy to teach, mentor, and spend time with me to provide the building blocks that will allow me to advance my career.
